Have you heard about Computer Forensic?

If we heard about Forensic, it is normal that we relate it to some investigation activities related to crime or research in the field. However, since many activities are related with computers, there are as well a so called computer forensic.

Computer forensics is (similar to other forensics related activities) trying to identify, recover, and investigate things that are related to data stored or have been stored in computers to be presented as evidence in a court of law.

Forensic computer activities are trying to recover deleted documents, emails from computers. Another activity is to track the location of hacker by using the IP address and providers that hackers are using. Experts of computer forensic can analyze and determine if a data or image have been under manipulation.

One example that I read was when a pedophile tried to publish his photo with a very young child. The guy tried to make the image blurry in his face. However, Computer forensic experts were able to reproduce the original image and identify the pedophile.

Another example is when one university student spread “I Love You” virus. The virus have been spreaded all over the world but the team of forensic computer experts were able to track down the original source where the virus spread. In the end, the programmer was captured in matter of days.
